Commercial deep cleaning vs. Regular cleaning: What’s the difference?

People will often talk about doing a deep clean at home, and we tend to think of this as things like moving the fridge to clean behind it, steam-cleaning the carpets, or washing the curtains.

Yes, this is part of a deep clean to do at home, but what about in commercial properties? What’s the difference in cleaning if a company is contracted to carry out the cleaning daily?

Regular Cleaning 101

Regular cleaning simply means keeping the area and “face” of the company clean on a daily basis. This is when all the immediately visible areas are taken care of.

For example, the floors are washed, garbage is emptied, tables are cleaned, and carpets are vacuumed. All the spaces that can be seen by everyone, or in high-traffic areas like the staff kitchen and washrooms, are cleaned every day.

Deep Cleaning 101

A deep clean is defined as “a complete cleaning process that includes all parts of something, not just surfaces or places where dirt can be seen”.

So, this is the time when the fridge is pulled out in order to clean behind it. A deep clean is recommended at certain times of the year, like seasonal changes, as this is when we can see the outside environment affecting the workspace and office staff more than usual.

When should deep cleaning be done?

A deep commercial cleaning is recommended once a month, but this can also be done more frequently in the following instances:

  • In preparation for a large corporate event or meeting: The office can look and smell fresher for your guests and staff during these important events.
  • Seasonal changes: During the change in weather, it can help to prepare for the coming cleaning challenges by starting off cleaner and fresher.
  • Re-evaluating your cleaning needs after a large event: After big events, areas that are often missed can be highlighted and, therefore, included in your regular cleaning. Or, areas that remain cleaner for longer can be removed from your deep cleaning schedule, or you can lower the frequency of such cleanings.

By carrying out the deep clean at these times, you can highlight problem areas and see what type of maintenance is required. Thus, your clients and staff will feel better as the atmosphere in the office will improve.

What is included in a deep clean?

Going beyond the visible areas is the point of the deep clean, so this ultimately means cleaning those hard-to-reach or forgotten-about places, including the following:

Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning

Ensuring that your furniture in common areas or places where clients gather for meetings are cleaned properly will give them a new life and a fresh, clean smell. During this process, any stains are eliminated, and the ground-in dirt is pulled up and removed, leaving the surfaces feeling cleaner as well.

Floor Refinishing

The floors are typically swept and mopped, and carpeted areas or rugs are vacuumed. With a deep commercial cleaning, these areas are washed, scrubbed, and refinished. This helps to remove stains, discolouration, and worn-out places.

Window Cleaning

In a regular clean, the windows are typically wiped down with a cleaner, thus restoring their shine. With a deeper clean, the windows are washed in more detail with a soap and water combination. Then, they are squeegeed and dried to give a longer-lasting sparkle and to check for damage.

Additional Sanitization

The washrooms and kitchen areas are prime breeding grounds for germs and bacteria. When the weather changes, we often see an increase in sickness rates, so sanitizing these spaces will help to reduce illnesses.

Exterior Maintenance

Using the pressure washer to clean the external windows and walkways helps to revive and refresh their outer appearance. This makes your business appear inviting, so you can stand out from the competition.

Lights and Fixtures

As the shorter days approach, you should make sure that the lights at your business are shining brightly. Deep cleaning the fixtures allows the lights to work properly in order to illuminate your office space.

Cleaning Behind Appliances

During a deep commercial cleaning, all the appliances in the kitchen, like the microwave, fridge, and oven, are pulled away from the walls and are cleaned to remove food and grease build-up, which can attract pests and cause a foul odour.

The same process occurs with filing cabinets, large commercial printers and fax machines, and other office equipment. When deep cleaning, all the dust and dirt build-up are removed, leading to better air quality.

Why should we deep clean?

Aside from the mere aesthetics of a clean office and the fresh smells, there are other reasons for a deep clean.

A deep clean helps to reduce or eliminate the threat of insects and other pests, especially in areas where there is a lot of food.

Cockroaches, for instance, thrive in these settings and can be very hard to get rid of. Depending on your industry, this can cause an office closure, but overall it will also negatively affect your staff and their comfort.

Additionally, a deep commercial cleaning improves air quality. With less dust and other allergens in the air, your staff will feel healthier in the office, thus reducing absences and increasing productivity.
